Moving home can be stressful but here are 10 top tips for moving home.
Make lists
Whether you are a natural list maker or not, when you are moving home, make lists. Listing what items are in which box and then properly labelling or marking each box may seem like an additional task but when you need something in a hurry, making lists will save considerable time and hassle.
Get lots of containers
Whether you aim to use boxes, bags, containers or a combination of these items, make sure that you have plenty of them. You don’t want to overfill your containers as this can cause problems so making sure that you have enough to contain all of your belongings makes perfect sense.
Sort your transport in advance
Whether you are moving yourself in a car or van that you own, you are hiring a van or you are hiring Removals Company, make sure that your plans are in place and have been agreed in advance of the big move.
Pack ahead of time
You may think that you have supreme packing skills and that working to a deadline helps you, but you should look to pack in advance as much as you can. There will be things you need right up until you move, and you should pack these last, but the more you have packed in advance, the easier it will be to move on the day.
Pack one room at a time
Being focused and clearing out one room at a time keeps things together and it also provides you with a sense of achievement when you have cleared a room. This provides the impetus for taking on the next room.
Clean as you go
While some people pack everything and then clean the house just before they leave, you will save considerable time if you clean alongside the packing process. As you move items from one room or area, clean that room or area, which means that it is taken care of or will only need a cursory wipe or clean before you move.
Use your luggage for important items
Even if you have listed all of your boxes and belongings, if you have a wealth of boxes to sift through, you may struggle to find what you are looking for. This is why placing important or valuable items in luggage or a suitcase will make them much easier to find when you need them.
Take care with fragile items
Using bubble wrap or paper for fragile items and placing them into secure boxes or containers will greatly minimise the risk of these items being broken.
Delegate roles and responsibilities
If you are a family or there are people helping you move, allocate certain roles to certain people. If one person tries to take care of everything, it can become too much and there is a chance that they will forget or overlook something. When different people take on responsibility, there is more chance that everything will be taken care of.
Thank the people who help you out
If you have relied on friend and family members to move, make sure you thank them for your help. Whether this is through food, drink or some other means, just be sure to be grateful for any help you have received.
